Joblessness is an agonizing and distressing phase, especially if you are eager to work and demonstrate your loyalty to the company. However, I would like to put a spin on the issue, upon reviewing resumes some time ago, there were discovered a number of flaws. Factors such as: compatibility, format and most importantly representation.  In other words, the resume says everything about the applicant and provides an immediate and detailed introduction to potential employers.

Compatibility

Why do you want this job? Are you prepared to answer this question in an interview? If not, it is essential to analyse the reason you are applying for this job. It should not be based solely on financial benefits. Often times if you apply to a job that does not suit your experience(s) and personality, you become perplexed and even more depressed than before. Additionally, no employer wants an unmotivated worker and one who hates their job in only a matter of weeks or months. Therefore as an alternative find a job that fits you in every aspect.

Format

This is always stressed in different blogs, articles and recommendations when writing a resume, it is important that the format of your resume maintain accuracy, consistency, honesty and exhibit integrity. More specifically, professionalism is an important component employers look for. Thus, if you have an e-mail address, for example This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , leaves your resume already on a bad note.  The chances of being even considered? Answer: very thin.

Representation

How you conduct yourself in different scenarios represents who you are. Moreover, believe it or not, due to the current technological advancements in the world, who you claimed to be or epitomized, actually goes beyond the resume. There was a particular incident, where a resume was e-mailed and upon reviewing, it initially did not meet the requirements; then again, the person was still being considered. Months after, it was discovered that the person was on one of those popular social networks, and the images, description and attitude of the person, confirmed everything. I leave the conclusion to your imagination.

Tips in writing excellent resumes:

  1. SELECT YOUR FORMAT - Often times, employers have very little patience in reading a resume that gives the round about story; therefore, getting straight to the point is the key. More importantly, selecting your resume format that best suits you is a key tactical choice. Here are the following formats:
    • THE CHRONOLOGICAL FORMAT - A chronological resume begins with an abbreviated list of the work history, stating with most recent position(s) listed first. This is especially beneficial for those who have a strong work history background; for the most part, if in the field they are looking out for.
    • THE FUNCTIONAL FORMAT - This illustrates your past experiences and skills, rather than the chronological work history. It is particularly suggested for those who do not have so much of a powerful work history background.
    • THE COMBINATION FORMAT - This lists the skills and experiences initially; in other words, it is a collaboration of both the chronological and functional format.
    • TARGETED FORMAT - This is a more narrowed resume concentrating primarily on the job you are applying for. It may be time consuming; as opposed to, a generalized resume, but the chances of winning over the human resource manager?s decision is very possible.
    • MINI FORMAT - This is a summary of your work experiences, skills and qualifications. In some cases an employer may just want an excerpt and this layout is ideal.
  2. GIVE CLEAR CONTACT INFORMATION - It is essential to provide proper and professional contact information; hence, if an employer is interested they are able to communicate. At the same time, with all of this technological versatility there are still predators and crazy people lurking around, thus providing your address and other detailed personal information here at Employment Jamaica is not recommended. A professional e-mail address is rather appropriate in this case, example This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  3. USE BULLETED SENTENCES - As we already figured, HR?s are very busy and have many resumes to review, and thus using abbreviated statements in one line that are powerful, is eye-catching and to the point.
  4. USE A LEGIBLE FONT - The standard and recommended font and size would be Times New Roman and 12. Employers are highly annoyed when the font and size is straining on the eyes. At the same time, do not make the font overwhelmingly large, where it takes up unnecessary space and ultimately it takes longer to read.
  5. ENSURE INFORMATION IS ACCURATE - If unsure about your academic records, skills or experiences confirm this beforehand, because what is stated in the resume is suppose to be a true representations of the facts. In addition, if fully accurate it depicts how you should function in the workplace and gives the employer a sense of comfort and trust. Not only in terms of honesty, but also look out for bad grammar and slangs.
  6. AVOID TOO MANY DETAILS - Two pages or even one and a half is recommended.
  7. BE CONSISTENT - If for example all your headings were in capital blocks and bold, keep it that way throughout the entire resume. Furthermore, if the structure in writing had a particular trend, you must maintain that in the resume.

Remember, consider your resume as a unique and exceptional marketing tool and it is there to make an impression on the employer enough for you to receive an interview. That means it needs to be flawless. Good luck in your job searching and future endeavors.
