Ras Penco
For Renford 'Ras Penco' Woodburn, Black History Month is a time to remember your heritage and pay tribute to the nation's greats. However, as an entertainer, he wants to see more than is currently being done to educate the youth about their heritage in Jamaica before, during and after the month.

The artiste, known for his runaway hit single Thousand Miles Away, recently shared his thoughts with The Sunday Gleaner, saying, "It would be good if we could have some more events that teach the youth more about their real roots and heritage during Black History Month. Yes, there are some events that aim to do that but there could be a lot more."

He continued, "Not much is different from Black History Month now compared to back then, except that the younger generation nah really fully embrace their history. If it was at 100 per cent then, it's now at like, 75 per cent."

Negative influences

One of the reasons for this, Ras Penco said, was the negative influences from various elements in society.

"The culture not really that strong again because is mainly negative influences them have. What need to happen is for people to embrace and teach positivity. Musicians play a great part as well, the media also, producers - everybody in entertainment. When the children at school, teachers, teach them about their culture. Wi just have to come together to push more positivity and get deep into the culture again. It doesn't have to be for the month of February alone either," he said.

Ras Penco will be doing his part to educate during Black History month through a live show which will be held at The Deck, Trafalgar Road, New Kingston.

Seriously I am amazed that its still being called music!!!. Gone are the days when there were conscious reggae music being written and sung. It seems if you aren't being derogatory then you arent performing. I am not saying there arent a few persons out there doing a great job, but the majority overwhelms them. Even this thing that they now have about if the lyrics isnt clean it cant be broadcast, well with the other version out there we might as well just play the real deal or continue with the bleeps, because the so called clean version doesnt make a difference. I will stick to my old hits, with that you cant miss! Smile

For I, the music is exactly where it needs to be. An although people talking bout music getting more lewd and grimey... I disagree.. it's just that the access to information age has made the lewdness and griminess easier to reach. So now more people know bout it.. but grass roots.. de music alright.. evolving as it has to.. you just do you if you're a musician, and nuh worry bout de next man.. music alone shall live eeh??

And as far as the immoralities in music.. jacket and tie a perpetuate theses immoralities for centuries.. but now the chilren come see it and talk it a road.. what in the dark must come in the light.. sometime the one who complain de most is most offended because dem secrets a reveal.

Jamaican music today is on modern day movement and we need to appreciate that and stop talking about sell out. the young generation artist are still Jamaican the rhythms are Jamaican. the lyrics are just words of young people, heritage is important, are really saying that heritage music his not dominant in Jamaica, these comments are just talks, there are lots of cultural artist in Jamaica has their his dance hall and other genre of artist. to me the music is okay we just me to develop the business aspect of the music that's all his needed in Jamaican music. We all need to accept the modern movement of Jamaican music stop being haters.

I believe music is transforming into several things. Several beats and rhythms. Different perspectives of thought being translated into music. Some of it for the good and most of it for the bad. Nobody talks about love anymore they mostly focused on objectifying women or ranting about things materialistically. People today are too caught up on what's hot and hype. Why arent there any songs related to cultural stimulation, because people today are not interested. They gravitate to things they see and hear now. The sad thing is that they dont realize how it got here to begin with. Cultural music is an option to send a message to the youth but it not really a strong option. If there was an option between Culture and Technlogy, kids today will pick Technology. If there was an option between Cultural music and Vybes Kartel, kids would pick Vybes Kartel, that just the way things are. Music has gone raunchy and so have the children growing up in it. There is no way to unlearn it. Its like crack; once u get on u cant get off. Children have to be taught in a bunker away from certain harsh music to give them enough time to really observe and absorb the cultural aspects of their country. We need more cultural figure heads to send the message to the children if they want to reach them.
